For sometime I've been admiring other people's Daily Photo Galleries. Not just the photos themselves, but the commitment of actually taking a photo worthy of upload every day. No doubt some will end up being quite mundane, but maybe that is OK, daily life can be pretty mundane after all! But hopefully the commitment will push me to think more about my photographs, getting out of my comfort zone of landscapes, and make me look at the world through different eyes.

johnloguk > 19.7.08 - Now I bet this one came as a bit of a surprise didn't it :)

It is the Lincoln Water Festival this weekend, which attracts all sorts of wonderful sights and sounds. These guys are pretty regular visitors actually, so when they strut their stuff on Lincoln High Street many people just carry on their merry way as though they weren't there. I had a few minutes to spare so took some shots. It is difficult to catch the energy of their performance, not least because they attract a huge crowd and people kept standing infront of me. There are three of them, they play instruments, using backing tapes to create a really atmospheric sound, and they really are a colourful sight on a blustery day.

This is an early post for me, and I might get some more shots of the festival later. I'm away at a conference tomorrow, so might have to resort to another pic from today as tomorrow's Daily, but I haven't given up hope quite yet.

The blur is in pp to convey some movement while keeping the face sharp, in case you hadn't worked that out yourselves :)
johnloguk > 18.7.08 - This is my low tech homage to Banjon's wonderful experiments with light :)

I was also desperate to post something before the film came on TV that I wanted to watch! The bottle was on a small table infront of the door. I should have used plain card for the background, but liked the pattern in the door. The camera was on a chair off to the side, and I provided the light by means of a wind up torch, while the camera did it's stuff on auto and self-timer. I know I'm not exactly pushing the boundaries of art here, but it is a start, and the film is on now :)
johnloguk > 17.7.08 - Fading Away :)

Phew what a day! Rain rain rain, kept me indoors all morning, I think I must be turning into Dita! But I'd taken so many risks with my gear in the rain recently I thought it was best not to push my luck any further. Then it was work work work all afternoon and into early evening, with no chance to take any pics. Then Steve and I played squash from 9 'til about 10.05, not bad for a 40 minute booking :) So there I was, all sweaty and horrible, and still desperate for a Daily. I could have come home for an SP, but on the other hand..... So I told Steve that I was heading for the Cathedral, trying to find a new angle for some night photography. I actually wandered quite a way down the hill before deciding on this, a new view of Lincoln for the Dailies. I took 6 shots at different settings, 2 of which had me in them. By the time I got home I was thoroughly k*******d, so I thought this was appropriate. Now I'm going to enjoy my favourite beer, Timothy Taylor's Landlord Strong Pale Ale, yummy!

I've just done a B&W conversion of this and posted it here, but I think I just prefer the colour version; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4333863_ympF9#333726105_hzJBr-XL-LB
johnloguk > 16.7.08 - Off the beaten track.

People are strange aren't they? This old cobbled backstreet is barely 100m from the main tourist route from the centre of Lincoln to the Cathedral, and yet it is usually deserted. Just over the brow of the hill there is a constant stream of tourists strolling down, and staggering up, the picturesque drag of Steep Hill, very few venture off it. This couple were at least keen to explore and get away from the crowds, and good on 'em. They were also prepared for heavy rain from that menacing sky, but it never came.

When I walk into town I try to vary my route in and out, I like exploring even in my hometown, and yet others are creatures of habits, we are a strange species indeed.

For those of you that liked my shot of the old Mall a couple of days ago, you can see the view from the other end that I took earlier today, it is here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4518270_XDZuH#333047084_W3Zcb-XL-LB
johnloguk > 15.7.08 - Something very simple tonight, like me :)

Organic beer, brewed with nettles, how could I not try that? Well it was pretty good actually, so I thought I'd share it with you. For the techies, I put the bottle on the window sill, with a black card behind, natural light from the right. The camera rested on the opposite end of the window sill. I took 6 shots to make sure I got a good one in focus. I upped the contrast and adjusted the levels to bring out some texture in the label. I hope you like this simple shot as much as I enjoyed the beer :)

We had quite a nice sunset this evening, but I left that here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053411_yY5Qg#332569741_Cojhk-A-LB
johnloguk > 14.7.08 - This was Lincoln's first shopping Mall, built in the late 60s/early 70s, not sure exactly when but I remember it opening. We were quite proud of it at the time, but now it looks very dated, is very small and the shops in it don't seem to do very well. I walk past it nearly every time I go into town, but rarely go in. I'd never looked at it for a photo before, but it caught my peripheral vision yesterday and I can't believe that I'd missed it. I don't see it as dated anymore, more like a slice of history, and I really love those lights and all the mirrors.

It was so funny trying to catch people reflected in the mirrors, especially as they were walking behind me and I had to guess when to press the shutter! The original images looked a bit flat, so I decided to try my watercolour effect, then it came out looking like one of George's shots, a slice of "Lincolnacana" :)
johnloguk > 13.7.08 - Patterns on the Land.

This is a shot from near the end of our Three Peaks Walk on Saturday, and possibly my favourite. The weather had closed in and we thought that we were going to have a wet last hour or so, but the rain held off and we even got a few small breaks in the cloud. This created little patches of dappled sunlight, which combined with the rolling landscape and drystone walls to create a beautiful scene.

I added the blurred edges in PS Elements because I thought it complimented the soft landscape. The whole gallery can be seen here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/5407879_n2ubU#330791663_ty8FN
johnloguk > 12.7.08 - Steve's Dad trying desperately not to look like he is standing between two members of the Daily Community :)

This is from yesterday on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk, and if anyone needed a reason not to let Daily members get together then this is it! I haven't even looked at all the photos I took on the Walk yet, but when I came to this one I laughed out loud and knew it had to be my Daily for yesterday. We didn't plan this, honestly we didn't, it just sort of ...er happened officer! It is straight out of the camera, not even a crop, despite the lying exif saying that I sharpened it!

I've finally finished uploading the other photos to a gallery of the walk here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/5407879_n2ubU#330791663_ty8FN
I think the technical term for the day was that it was "real" :) If you can afford the time it would be best to use the slide show feature and enjoy the walk from the comfort of your armchairs!

PS. To answer M-R's question. These convex mirrors are quite common in country areas. This one is placed on a bend in the road so that anyone coming out of the farm track opposite can see if any cars are coming.
johnloguk > 11.7.08 - Self portraits are getting a bit regular in my Dailies, but it's been a long time since I did a B&W. Neither was a deliberate choice today, I just ran out of options and this is as creative as I can be in the circumstances. The only light was the TV. It is a shame the camera focused on my chin and not my eyes, I suppose I could have taken a lot more until I got it right. I cropped it tighter and played around with the contrast to get a grainy feel to it.

Friday is always busy, but tomorrow I am driving up to Yorkshire with Steve and his Dad to join some people on a charity walk. This evening I should be sorting out my walking gear, planning food, and getting ready for a 5am start! But instead I'm watching one of my all time favourite films, "In The Heat of The Night".

I remember watching it as a 12-13 yr old boy at the school film club. It had a profound effect on me, even at that young age. It opened my eyes to so many things, not least of which were politics and blues music! I never get tired of watching this wonderful film. The dialogue sparks off the screen, and the pairing of Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier is one of the best ever. But this evening I've been watching it with a photographer's eye as well, and now I can see how every frame is beautifully put together, it is a stunning piece of art as well as a classic film.

This all means that I'm unlikely to comment on many Dailies this evening, and if I manage to post one tomorrow it will be very late. But hopefully I'll get a nice Daily out of our big walk.
