COOPER'S HAWK

Saturday, we had an unexpected visitor outside the kitchen window. I literally crawled in my robe down the kitchen steps to grab my camera. It was a dark snowy day here and he was hungry, so he stayed around for a while. Clutching a young cardinal that it just caught (off of my feeder I presume!!!), he stared at me through the glass..I NEED to clean the window! Then jumped to the stump about 5 feet away to eat his meal. These are 3 of the photos...I took 243 in all, including a few minutes of video! Ok, I know, I over did it a bit, but I wanted to make sure I got it. I have some really neat shots of the meal, which when he finished, about a half hour later, all that was left was the beak and the tail feathers...other feathers were tossed into the air and disappeared. Quite interesting to watch.
Good thing this is a bird hawk not a squirrel hawk!!!!!

I also have about 1500+ Florida photos to sort through yet. I can't see detail well enough on the laptop screen to know which ones are the best, so it is a task for the big iMac here at home.. At least I have some photos to share with you all in the coming holiday weeks.
Mom4squirrels > ROSEATE SPOONBILL

This guy was way out on a mangrove tree at Merritt Island...Black Point Drive for those who have been there. These guys never hold still when feeding, Skimming their big spoon-shaped beaks back and forth through the water constantly...Tough bird to photograph sometimes. He's a little over exposed out there, but you have to take 'em as you see them... Not like Gail's beauty in the air, but I'm happy to have a photo of one that is in focus...lol

FLORIDA SCRUB JAY

Hurray, we've found these beautiful endangered birds once again this year in Florida. We're down here on vacation for two weeks. The weather has been awful. Rain or dark clouds for several days...Had a fleece on nearly everyday, with one night at 42 degrees. It beats the snow and colder temps at home, but where is the Florida sun?

We hope to find the jays once again...earlier in the day in better light too.. This one was photographed about an hour before sunset...way too dark to get the optimal results, however, I was tickled with the shot regardless of the higher ISO needed to pull it off. Here is one other capture from a few days ago.

Shhhh...BABY SQUIRREL SLEEPING!

I don't usually post photos of rehab squirrels, because they are not pets, (plus it is illegal to keep wildlife, so I don't want to encourage anyone to try and raise one ; except by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, which I am), but this little fox squirrel was so comfy on my husband's arm that I thought I'd share just one snapshot on Dailies. :-)

This is an orphaned Fox Squirrel. She is now a big, teenager... But here is her story from a few months ago...
She is about 4 weeks old. Her eyes will not open until she is 5-6weeks old!. She will be on puppy formula for another 6-8 weeks until she is fully weaned. Bob was holding her while I fed her brother and she fell asleep, snuggled in his arm. ..
All of the squirrels that I receive in the late summer/early fall, when old enough, live in a large outdoor pen all winter and stay there until the leaves come back out on the trees in May. The reason I keep them so long is that by the time they are old enough to be released, they will have no territory, nest site or food stored for the winter. ( However, Spring babies stay on average for only 4 months and are released in July) Over the winter these Fall babies will grow to adult size (2lbs) and instinctively turn wild. It is quite gratifying to watch a young squirrel return to the wild and know that you made the difference between life and death only months before!

COME, TAKE A WALK, & DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF FALL

Low late afternoon sunshine can certainly make a wonderful scene for enjoying fall colors. Here the sun seems to beckon you to take a walk down the path and discover nature...

 GOD BLESS YOU ALL.....
REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE...AND ARE, SERVING OUR COUNTRY ON VETERANS DAY 2009

I am thankful that my son is now home from Afghanistan...but my thoughts are still with those who are there and will be deployed to the Middle East. My heart is with them and their families on this day of Thanks and Remembrance.

...on the note of Thanks. Thank you to all of you who commented on my squirrel photo yesterday. I tried to get back to each of you who wrote...the number of comments were overwhelming. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your comments :-)
Mom4squirrels > BLUEBIRD BOXES AREN'T JUST FOR BIRDS ANYMORE!

(Red Squirrel )

This adorable youngster is an example of why one needs to put a "predator guard" or metal cover around the hole of nest boxes. Bluebird boxes are the perfect size for little red squirrels, thus the birds (and flying squirrels I might add )can lose their home. Note the chew marks around the hole...just the right size to SQUEEZE through...lol

Have a good one...

RASPBERRY MOSAIC

Fall color is barely hanging on here in NE Ohio, but the splendid colors of the raspberry bushes are hanging on for all to see. Taken in late afternoon light, I created a watercolor of the image to show off the colors more richly. (Perhaps another jigsaw puzzle?...LOL)

We've been "winterizing" the patio, cleaning gutters and preparing for the flakes that will soon be flying. Thanksgiving is around the corner...amazing! So much to do, so little time! Have a good week....

RED OAK LEAVES

I had a hard time deciding which photo to post...so I'll attach the uncropped version too. The cool thing is that I played with some filters to try to make this image different than just pretty fall leaves. If it is blown up larger than what you can see on Smugmug, the bg has lines in it that make it look like it's on a canvas. I used the angle filter to achieve that, but had kept the foreground leaves lassoed so that only the bg changed. Cross-hatch worked nicely for that effect too...what fun! So here is the link to the uncropped version..seriously, I would love to know which looks better. Cropping is a real art and I am trying to improve my eye for it...thanks

Thanks once again for yesterday's comments. Mike is home, looking great, but now has the FLU!! So I am a little freer to post some photos since errands are now on the back burner. Your thoughtful words meant a lot to all of us, and my heart goes out to all of you who have family members and friends overseas. Special thoughts go to Pearl who's nephew left for Afghanistan two weeks ago.
